What Is a Moon Sign?
Your Moon sign is the zodiac sign the Moon was moving through at the moment you were born. In Vedic astrology, the Moon describes the mind, emotions, instincts and inner life, which is why it is used so often for daily predictions and personal timing.

Why Is My Vedic Moon Sign Different?
Western astrology generally uses the tropical zodiac, which is anchored to the seasonal cycle and the March equinox. Vedic astrology generally uses the sidereal zodiac, which works from a stellar reference point.
Because of the precession of the equinoxes, these two reference points have gradually separated. At present, the difference is roughly 24 degrees, although the precise value depends on the date and ayanamsa used. Moon Sutras uses the Lahiri ayanamsa.
This can move the Moon into the previous zodiac sign compared with a Western tropical chart. You may know yourself as a Scorpio Moon in Western astrology, for example, but calculate as a Libra Moon here. Moon Sutras uses your birth date, birth time and birthplace to calculate the Moon's sidereal position at the moment you were born. Your birthplace helps account for timezone and daylight-saving context, so the result can reflect the astronomical Moon position through the Lahiri sidereal zodiac.

An exact birth time gives you the most reliable result. The Moon moves continuously, so your birth time matters most when the Moon was close to changing sign, Nakshatra or Pada.
Can I find my Moon sign without a birth time?
Yes, but treat the result as provisional. If you don't know your birth time, you can use 12:00 as an approximate reference. If the Moon changed sign, Nakshatra or Pada during the day you were born, your actual birth time could change the result.
Why is my Vedic Moon sign different from my Western Moon sign?
Vedic and Western astrology generally use different zodiac reference systems. Most Western astrology uses the tropical zodiac, while Moon Sutras uses the sidereal zodiac with Lahiri ayanamsa. The two are currently separated by roughly 24 degrees, so your Moon can fall in a different sign. The birth moment is the same. The zodiac used to measure it is different.
Is my Moon sign the same as my Sun sign?
Not necessarily. Your Sun sign and Moon sign describe different planetary positions in your birth chart, so they may fall in the same sign or completely different ones. Your Sun is associated with identity and vitality, while your Moon speaks more to emotional responses and instinct.
What is a Nakshatra?
A Nakshatra is one of the 27 lunar mansions used in Vedic astrology to locate the Moon more precisely. Two people can share the same Moon sign but have different Nakshatras, adding another layer to how that Moon placement is interpreted.
What is a Nakshatra Pada?
Each Nakshatra is divided into four quarters, known as Padas. Your Pada pinpoints your Moon's position even further, adding another level of detail within your Nakshatra.
